Study and Organizational Skills PDF Print E-mail

In addition to providing assistance with the content of specific academic subjects, Portland Pupils offers guidance in study and organizational skills.  We focus on several strategies necessary to be a successful student, no matter what the subject.

Each session will include working on one or all of the following skills:

1. Completion of assignments: Your child and his or her tutor will discuss what assignments have or have not been completed since the last meeting. Open communication between the student, the tutor, parents, and teachers is very important in this area.

2. Planning ahead: Your child and his or her tutor will agree upon a plan for completing current and future assignments, as well as any overdue work. This will include working on time management and prioritization skills, as well as keeping a current and up to date day-planner filled with assignments, schedules, and appointments.

3. Organization: The tutor will make sure that your child has all necessary materials for completing assignments and is keeping them in an organized manner (usually a three-ring binder). Good note-taking skills are essential for utilizing the information presented in class and will also be emphasized.

4. Preparation for quizzes and tests: Often the most difficult study skill for students to master, your child and his or her tutor will practice specific methods of studying, depending on the material and the format of the quiz or test.

Through teaching our students these skills, we have found that students have performed better academically, have taken on more personal responsibility for their academics, and have gained more confidence in the classroom.  Being prepared, knowing how to study, and keeping things organized all helps students to do and feel their best in school.

We at Portland Pupils look forward to helping your child learn these important skills to help guide him or her through his or her entire academic career.
